I’m going to hunt for a data science role like a data scientist
By tracking, analyzing, and optimizing my job search
I’d like to introduce to a project I’ve been working on to help me do just that. I’ll call it the Data Science Job Search Tracker (for now… but please help me find a spicier name).

The “Data Science Job Search Tracker” is a simple tool I will be working on to help me keep track of the job applications I’ve submitted, the companies I’ve applied to, and the status of each application. It also provides me with insights into my job search progress, such as the number of applications I’ve submitted, the number of interviews I’ve had, and any number of offers I’ve received. It will optimize my job search with a new “Cover Letter” generator that will help me create a personalized cover letter for each job application built with modern LLM technologies.
More importantly, It will be a small sample project to help me practice my data science skills and add to a portfolio of projects that I can showcase to potential employers. There are certainly better projects to show specific machine learning skills, but this project is VERY relevant to my current situation and will help me practice some data engineering, data visualization, and data analysis skills… and I’ll probably shoe-horn in some machine learning somewhere.
Take a look at the draft of the Data Science Job Search Tracker above. Over the coming weeks, I will be adding more features, improving the design, and making it more user-friendly. I will also be writing articles about the project, the tools and technologies I’m using, and the data science techniques I’m applying.
Articles and work coming soon:
- A detailed description of the project — Following something similar to the CRISP-DM process
- The data sources and data collection process
- Plotly Dash — building the front end (I’m not a front-end developer)
- Using Google Cloud Platform App Engine to host the project
- Cover Letter Generator — LLM, prompting, and more
- BigQuery for data storage and analysis
- Data visualization in Plotly — histograms, sankey diagrams, and more
- CI/CD with Google Cloud Build
- Segmentation Project to look for patterns in job applications — PCA, t-SNE, clustering, and more
I’m excited to share this project with you and hope you find it useful.
If you have any suggestions, feedback, or would like to contribute, take a look on Github. I’d love to hear from you!
